Pirates invade St Paul’s

pirate

30th June

During Winter Holiday Club YMCA St Paul’s OSHC were invaded by pirates! The children designed their pirate costumes and came up with their own pirate names. For example, Captain Squidbones, Pirate Polly and One Eyed Mitch. The staff and children then ventured out to the high seas in their boat for a pirate treasure hunt. It was a great day and best of all no one got sea sick.

Four legged visitor at Enoggera

YMCA Enoggera OSHC had a visit from Assistance Dogs Australia. Cherie, the Senior Trainer and Coordinator for QLD, very kindly volunteered her time to come and talk to the children about the special work that the Assistance Dogs do and also about their fundraising month ‘Dogtober’. The children were extremely welcimging and had some interesting questions to ask. A selected few even got to shake hands with the dog that was brought along. Furthermore, Assistance Dogs Australia were happy to receive almost $60 in donations from the kind Enoggera families.

Undercover at St Paul's

With the excitement of YMCA’s Chief Operating Officer  Nick Cox, going undercover on the hit TV series Undercover Boss the children of YMCA St Paul’s OSHC got into the spirit of it too.  We had our best Nick impersonations (can you see the resemblance with the photo of Nick that was used for the Undercover Boss promotion) and we had plenty of laughs with the children trying to disguise themselves to go undercover at YMCA for the day; the children were clever in their disguises but luckily we were  still able to recognise them.  We had a fun afternoon with lots of dress ups and disguises and we too uncovered some funny stories of our own!  We’d also like to thank all our YMCA St Paul’s families for their support and feedback for watching YMCA go undercover.  It was really fantastic to hear all your comments!

1000 Cranes at St Paul's

craneThe children at YMCA St Paul's OSHC have set themselves a goal to try and make 1000 paper origami cranes to display in their room. This all came about with one child's idea to teach the staff and some of the children at Before School Care how to make origami cranes. After making a few cranes the group thought 'How many can we make?'. One child suggested the group make 30, another said 100 however after looking up a little information on the crane and what they represent the group thought maybe they should try and aim to make 1000 cranes as this is quiet significant in Japan.  According to Japanese legend, anyone who folds 1000 origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy creatures, and said to live for a thousand years. So the staff and children all agreed that they would try and reach their goal of folding thousand origami cranes.  Over the last week during Before and After School Care the children have been making their own origami paper by painting, marbelling, dying and stamping. So far they have made 200 origami cranes, only 800 left ... so send YMCA St Paul's OSHC ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) your support and keep the kids motivated to reach their goal.
